Considering I watch/am invested in/love/have an obsession for lots of TV it is inevitable that when a key character is killed off I break a little inside. I grow close with them just for them to pass away and unless they come back as a ghost (ahem, Nate Fisher) then that is the last you see of them.
Just an FYI, as a new watcher of Dr. Who I was slightly spoiled which bums me out. Here is a list of shows it may spoil a little if you read this. Just in case you just started something new. Don't be like me you guys.
Beverly Hills, 90210, Lost, Dr. Who, The Simpsons, The Sopranos, Scrubs, Cheers, Charmed, How I Met Your Mother, Prison Break, Brothers & Sisters, Six Feet Under, Game Of Thrones, Alias, The West Wing, Roswell, All In The Family/Archie Bunker's Place, Desperate Housewives, Dawson's Creek, Grey's Anatomy, MASH, Degrassi, Dexter, The Wire, ER, Sesame Street, Rescue Me, Madmen, The OC, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Futurama
Some memorable character passings for me are as follows...
Alex on Roswell

Luckily I don't have to site this because it is from my blog and it comes up when you google "Alex Whitman Roswell Death". That made it really easy.
Good lord I probably mourned for a week on this (*sorry to those who are essentially watching Roswell through my recap posts. You'll forget by the time we get to this part). It was a simpler time when I was really, really invested in this show and nothing else mattered and my mom made me go to school the day after he died. It was the hardest day ever you guys. And finally when him and Heigl were about to get back together, too! And if you watch Dexter you know he sort-of relives this inevitable fate.
Marshall's dad on How I Met Your Mother

Oh the tears. I watched this online and the only episode that wasn't uploaded was this one so I just skipped it only to find out that in the next one I'd missed Marshall's dad's death. Oh lord, it was kind of awkward until I found this one and then...the tears. Out of nowhere his dad passed away due to a heart attack, after Marshall had received some good news, he had to hear this from Lily.
Nate Fisher on Six Feet Under

Man, this one I saw coming, but not when it did...considering it's a show all about death. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor early on and I sort of expected him to die in the finale...however they had him die just a few episodes before...and appear as a horrible ghost until the show ended.
Just for kicks, the ending of Six Feet Under...the only finale besides The Creek that made me want to totally re-evaluate my priorities.
I may have to re-watch that, soon.
Denny and George on Grey's Anatomy

Now poor Heigl has lost two loves, first Alex Whitman and now Denny Duquette. I loved Denny from the beginning, even if he did mess with Izzie and Dr. Karev. He was sweet and lovely and after all that she went through to save him he ended up dying anyway.
Not gonna lie though, when George died I think I lost it more. I had no clue it was coming, the montage of him at the end in an army suit indicating that as his "happy place", all while Izzie is going through her own potential death sequence? TOO MUCH TO HANDLE GUYS.

Fry's dog on Futurama

It's no wonder he is listed as number one on several lists you come across when googling "character deaths" (which I did A LOT to write this). I would have had no idea either, until a friend of mine told me to just sit down and watch this episode. I don't watch Futurama, I obviously prefer King Of The Hill (and why wouldn't I?), but this episode pulled at my heart. After Fry is frozen and sent to the future his dog sits and waits for him to come back. And grows old and sick and just continues to wait for his owner. And I guess it's based on real life? Even sadder.
Another great post on this is that of my friend Chryshele, if you'd like to read her thoughts on this as well.
