just me and the blackberry

So apparently I'm the only person in the universe that still uses (and loves) a Blackberry Smartphone. Can the Blackberry even be referred to as a Smartphone? According to my husband the only reason it qualifies is because it has an app store, and I'll admit, the apps aren't that fancy. However, my dedication to Blackberry has never faultered since I got my first Pearl in 2008. I hated that phone but I loved the operating system, I only started loving the phone when I upgraded to a Curve the next year. That lasted quite a while, and in 2010 I replaced it with Zack's old Bold which lasted until about two weeks ago (he'd had it at least a year prior to me taking it over). That's a pretty good track record, I'd say. I had little problems with it besides the occasional sticking of the trackball, and overall I've been completely satisfied.

Now I'm starting to change my tune.

I hate that I'm even thinking this about my beloved Blackberry but I've been so disappointed for the last week that it's easy that I start to wonder if maybe I should move with the world to an Andriod or an Iphone (more than likely the former, Mac's and I do not get along). Honestly, touch screens kind of freak me out (yes I have a kindle, so what?) but eventually I think I'm going to have to make the move.

I started thinking this on Monday. Even after the Bold decided to die on my birthday I wasn't really that upset. That phone had really run it's course. You could throw it across the room and it would still work so when it finally decided to just turn off, never to turn on again, I was bummed but I understood. I was due for an upgrade anyway so Zack went online and ordered me the new Curve. When it arrived I was instantly in love. It was so much smaller and sleeker than my previous phone, it had more features and it ran so wonderfully. I knew I had to treat this new Berry with love an affection. I named it WesleyBerry after my favorite Star Trek: TNG character, Wesley Crusher because I ordered a very amazing skin to go on it as seen below.

This skin made quite the buzz on twitter, it was actually retweeted by Mr. Wil Wheaton himself after Zack posted about it. That's a big deal, yo. I was feeling very optimistic about this lovely Berry.

Monday after a long session at the gym, my phone was running a little slow. Thinking nothing of it I decided to perform what we Berry users call a "hard reset" meaning we pull the batter and it resets without deleting information. Kind of a reboot, if you will. Well I did that and the system restarted. Once it finished instead of chiming and bringing me to my homescreen it restarted...again. And again, and again, and again. I can't tell you how many times this cycle went on but after about 2 hours I took it into the store. I'd tried a factory reset, I'd tried charging it, I couldn't figure out why WesleyBerry had decided to leave me so soon. At the store I was informed they would be sending me a new one in two days. Oh the joys. It wasn't so much being without a phone (honestly I hardly missed it) it was more the fact that I was annoyed that after less than a week the phone had shorted. I've had good luck with phones overall so maybe this was just my time?

This did give me time to ponder if maybe it will be time soon to move away from the Blackberry into another market? So many have tried to push me in the Iphone/Andriod direction and I haven't wanted to even entertain the idea but maybe it is time? Or maybe it's too early for me to make a decision. I'm going to give this new Berry an honest try and see where I fall in the next while.

Sorry to disappoint, Blackberry gal 4-ever.

  1. Rachel is a blackberry lover too. Several have tried to sway her and she won't budge either. So you're not alone. This being said, I still don't understand the love for a phone with micro-sized buttons...

  2. I loved my blackberry more than anything, i still see it from time to time and think about much i loved that thing. i upgraded to android in May, and I can't stand it. I miss the blackberry set up, the keyboard, everything. However, now that I've been with android, I don't think I could go back to bb and lose all of the apps i've fallen in love with. BB needs to step up their game, they have completely fell out of the iphone/android race. But at least they finally updated their cameras! I saw you can get a curve with a 5.0mp camera. pretty bad ass!
